Types of Arthritis

Although arthritis can afflict anyone, it is a disease that usually strikes the older population. The CDC estimated that in 2003-2005, half of the adults 65 and older reported that they have been diagnosed with arthritis. Most people tend to use “arthritis” as a general term to describe aching or swollen joints. However, there are over 100 of different types of arthritis, including osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis which leads to the degeneration of cartilage in the joints. Although osteoarthritis can strike anywhere, it usually affects the most-used joints such as the finger, knees, hips, and feet. Cartilage is the cushiony substance between bones, so when it breaks down, your joints can be very painful.

There is no way to completely stop osteoarthritis, but there are some ways that you can treat it. Medicines such as those containing acetaminophen and non-steroid anti-inflammatories can be helpful. Exercises that increase flexibility and strength might be beneficial as well. If your osteoarthritis is bad enough, doctors might encourage you to get a joint replacement.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

The second most common type of joint inflammation, rheumatoid arthritis, is usually easily distinguishable due to its symmetric swelling. For instance, with osteoarthritis you may only have pain in one knee, while with rheumatoid arthritis both knees will hurt. Interestingly, rheumatoid arthritis can affect other parts of the body such as the eyes, nerves, lungs, and skin.

Like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis basically degrades the cartilage between joints. However, sometimes rheumatoid arthritis can create nodules underneath your skin. Treating rheumatoid arthritis is similar to osteoarthritis in that medication, stretching and strength exercises, and sometimes surgery can help alleviate your pain.
