Active Adult Communities
An estimated 55% of Baby Boomers say that they will move once they retire. With the first wave of this generation reaching retirement age in 2007-2009, we should be expecting a huge increase in the amount of retirees moving and enjoying their newfound freedom.
To take advantage of these newly liberated Baby Boomers, home builders and community planners are developing an increasingly popular option for still-active, empty-nested adults. Typically called active adult communities, there are a variety of neighborhoods that are open only to those 55 and up who want to move away from the old houses where they raised children, but are still too active for retirement and assisted-living communities.
Most communities have a specific age requirement for moving into the housing development. This is usually age 55 or older. However, not all neighborhoods billed as “active adult communities” or “retirement communities” have such a strict qualification. Instead, they are just targeted towards older couples and singles without children.
Typical active adult communities have certain amenities that appeal to an older, retired crowd. For some, living on a golf course is a great option because they can play golf throughout the week. For others, residing in a condominium in town is wonderful because it can mean no yard to maintain and is usually closer to shopping venues.
Some retirement communities are more like second homes or vacation destinations. Active adult developments are now being offered in mountainous areas, waterfront property, and seaside areas. Even if you do not choose to live in a country club neighborhood, adult living communities often offer a clubhouse with a restaurant. Other amenities can include fitness centers with indoor and outdoor pools, walking trails, tennis courts, and social activities.
